Barcelona City Council has taken a significant step towards sustainability with the recent installation of 15 Smafybin smart solar compactor garbage cans on the beaches of Nova Icaria and Bogatell. This project has been carried out to improve the efficiency of waste management in one of the busiest areas of the city, especially during the summer season. The installation includes 12 garbage cans for packaging (yellow) and 3 for general waste (gray) distributed along the promenade. These 100% solar-powered garbage cans have proven to be highly efficient, reducing the frequency of emptying from 10 times a day to just once or twice, even on the busiest days.

These Smafybin smart garbage cans are equipped with a compaction system that significantly increases their storage capacity, allowing a 200-liter garbage can to hold up to five times more waste than a conventional 110-liter bin. In addition, they are equipped with sensors that monitor the fill level in real time and send alerts to cleaning operators via a mobile app, facilitating more efficient management and reducing operating costs. The implementation of these solar garbage cans not only optimizes waste management, but also improves the aesthetics and cleanliness of Barcelona’s beaches, creating a more pleasant environment for residents and visitors. By reducing the need to empty garbage cans so frequently, garbage truck traffic and therefore CO2 emissions are reduced, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable environment.
